Giants sweep Mavericks to end road trip
Your Fort McMurray Giants wrap up their six game road trip just where they started it, with a sweep. The Giants defeated the Medicine Hat Mavericks by a score of 13-0 on Monday night to complete their seven day road swing that saw them post a 5-1 record while playing against East Division foes.
The tone was set early by returnee, LHP Matt Whitney who spent this past season at West Texas A&M University. Whitney put together a solid 2023 summer before making his return to the mound in 2024 in this one. Whitney tossed seven innings, allowing only a single hit while striking out seven Mavericks.
Whitney's strong performance allowed the Giants time to get on the scoreboard in this one, striking for their first run in the fourth inning after a Jaden Wiley single and stolen base, Manny Alberto hit an RBI double to right field to score Wiley to open the scoring.
The Giants proceeded to score four runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and six more in the eight to extend their lead and cruise to victory over the Mavericks. Some offensive standouts in this one, Third Baseman Junho Son continues his hot start, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, Shortstop Manny Alberto followed suit going 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and added three runs scored. Meanwhile newcomer Jaden Wiley set the table all game collecting three hits, walking once and scoring four runs.
